How States Are Working Together to Defend Against Cyber Terrorism & Crime
May 2, 2012 - (Duration: 60 minutes)

In this webinar, the Digital States Performance Institute (DSPI) explores best practices for cyber-security and highlights successful examples of multi-jurisdictional collaboration and cooperation in the fight against cyber-terrorism and crime.

Discussion topics include:

Managing Data in a Consolidated Enterprise
December 1, 2011 - (Duration: 60 minutes)

In the 2010 Digital States Performance Institute’s Survey of State Governments a number of interesting facts stand out:

  • Literally all states are virtualizing servers in order to reduce operating costs, save energy and provide faster start-up support for new projects.
  • Most states are engaged in some form of data center consolidation; seeking to take advantage of virtualization on a larger scale and to gain the cost savings associated with economies of scale.
  • In terms of their approach to consolidation, most states in the survey report a strong need to change the way they are handling Data Management. However, a majority of the states have neither established specific plans to change their approach to data management, nor do they think that a change in their approach to data management will occur in the short term.
This webinar will explore the topic of data management and specifically why changing to a more central approach is so difficult. The discussion will include how states are balancing the responsibility of data management between the central IT organization and the business enterprise.  It will explore specific facets of the problem including:
  • Data Governance
  • Data Architecture and Design
  • Database Administration (what’s new)
  • Data Quality—who is responsible?
  • Data Warehousing and the growing demands for business intelligence/performance management
  • Document, Record and Content Management
  • Data Security Management

With cloud computing and consolidation becoming major trends, the implications for data management, particularly with issues around ediscovery and data security management, are coming to the forefront and need to be addressed through IT policy and enhanced data management procedures. In this webinar we will hear from two state practitioners who are leading the way in implementing these new data management disciplines.

Using the Web to Break Down Government Silos
August 30, 2011 - (Duration: 60 minutes)

Individual governmental agencies are created for the specific purpose of focusing governmental functions into smaller units of administration, usually focused on a specific mission or a set of programs organized around a similar function. Most governments, particularly larger entities, need to organize in this manner in order to cover the wide range of services that they must tend to. Certainly, providing law enforcement or other public safety services is very different from running libraries or schools, administering social welfare programs or providing business and economic developmental services. As agencies look to deliver more of their services to the public via the Internet, a major design decision arises as to whether these self-service and informational portals should be agency-centric or constituent-centric.

This webinar focuses on two states that are using the web to help them move past the agency-centric approach to delivering services. Examples are presented where states have begun to break down the traditional barriers that cause governmental agencies to operate in separate informational silos. Speakers – John Conley, Executive Director, State Internet Portal Authority, State of Colorado and Herbert Quinde, Chief Information Officer, Illinois Department of Corrections – show how they were able to get around the traditional barriers and deliver services that are more aligned with the needs of the citizenry.

On a Clear Day, You Can See Beyond...
December 9, 2010 - (Duration: 60 minutes)

On December 9, 2010, The Digital States Performance Institute (DSPI) broght together state CIOs for a preview of their own plans and to comment on the findings of the Digital States CIO Poll, which provides a landscape view of the technologies, policies and practices that matter most now — and those that will be the most important two or three years down the road.

The public sector IT community has been on the front lines as government has faced rapid and significant change — from recession to recovery and elections and transitions to health information exchanges and retirement bow waves. The challenge for technology leaders is to see beyond the headlines toward a preferred future, and thinking through how to get there. To paraphrase a prominent author, the challenge and opportunity is to begin with the end in mind.
