Surveys and Awards

Digital States Survey

The Digital States Survey, conducted biannually in even years, is a comprehensive study that examines best practices, policies and progress made by state governments in their use of digital technologies to better serve their citizens and streamline operations. The survey is conducted approximately April - June (2010, 2012, etc.). The awards are presented during the National Association of State CIOs (NASCIO) annual conference each September.

The Digital States Performance Institute (DSPI)

The Digital States Performance Institute (DSPI) is not a place, but a community of interest around modernizing and improving government. The newly expanded DSPI builds on the successes of the biennial Digital States Survey with a year-round program of ongoing original research, analysis and tools in the strategic planning process through regional events, Webinars, podcasts, online communities or panels, and - of course - a Twitter feed. All of it is intended to extend the value of the Digital States benchmarks through the documentation and sharing of best and emerging practices by states that are committed to meeting today's needs and tomorrow's expectations.

A Mulligan for Performance Measures and Management: States of Transition

The Center for Digital Government welcomes senior state executives from Arkansas, Missouri and Oregon to discuss the state of performance and measurement in their states. As methodologies mature, existing measures have been held up to increased scrutiny -- some have past muster and others have been found wanting. A number of states and localities find themselves regrouping and taking a fresh look at integrating performance, accountability, and transparency into state IT programs, service delivery channels and internal operations.

Click the following link to listen to the discussion about what the catalyst for change from previous practices was in each state and what the future holds in terms of bringing these disciplines to bear on doing the public's business in an era of transparency. Learn from peers about what makes a good and useful measure and how to identify it when you have one.
